Alumnus is new parliamentary poet laureate

UWaterloo English alumnus George Elliott Clarke has been named Canada’s new parliamentary poet laureate. In 2002, he received the Governor General’s Award for poetry for his collection Execution Poems. His 2005 novel George and Rue was longlisted for the IMPAC Award. In total, George has published nine books of poetry, four plays, two books of literary criticism, and one novel. He has been Toronto Poet Laureate (2012-2015), and is currently a professor of English at the University of Toronto. Among his new responsibilities? Writing poems, “especially for use in Parliament on important occasions.”
