It’s that time of year where UWaterloo English faculty nominate students for particular awards, and students nominate themselves for others. Then there’s an awards ceremony with food and beverages and professors and students and a few excited parents. Read on to find out more.–JLH

Quarry Integrated Communication Co-op English Award (Submission by student):
Candidates for this award are enrolled in English Co-op, Year 3 or 4, maintaining a minimum overall average of 78%, and a minimum work-term evaluation of “Excellent.” See the Student Awards website (http://uwaterloo.ca/student-awards-financial-aid/undergraduate-awards/awards-current-undergraduate-students/faculty-arts-awards; scroll down to the appropriate description) for more information on the award terms and submission procedures. $500. Deadline: Feb. 15.

Albert Shaw Poetry Prize (Submission by student):
Award in memory of hockey player and poetry lover Albert Shaw. 1-5 poems, maximum total length: 10 standard pages (250 words per page). Two judges. $200

English Society Creative Writing Award for Poetry (Submission by student):
1-5 poems. Maximum total length: 10 standard pages (250 words per page). Two judges. $200

English Society Creative Writing Award for Prose (Submission by student):
1-5 short prose works or extracts from longer works to a maximum total length of 10 standard pages (250 words per page). Two judges. $200.

The Rhetoric and Professional Writing Award (Submission by student OR faculty nomination):
The department will accept submissions from students and nominations by professors of any work of technical communication, professional writing, textual editing, or paper-based design
completed in an English class at UW. Two judges. $200 winner; $100 runner-up

The Rhetoric and Digital Design Award (Submission by student OR faculty nomination):
The department will accept submissions from students and nominations by professors of digitally-based projects completed in an English class at UW. Two judges. $200 winner; $100 runner-up

Co-op Work Report:
Candidates for this award are those who have received “outstanding” evaluations for reports submitted in the year preceding the March Awards ceremony. Two judges. $200

Deadline for all awards except the Quarry award is February 27, 2015. Prize amounts indicated are based on 2013 awards, and may be subject to slight change. See the English department website for more information and full submission guidelines (https://uwaterloo.ca/english/awards).
